Publish! Because Most Won’t.

“Do or do not, there is no try” – Jedi Master Yoda
If I waited for this post to be perfect, you’d never read it. Why? Because I wouldn’t be able to push the “publish” button on my WordPress blogging software. Have you ever considered that the best books in the world are laying in someone’s sock drawer in Topkea, Kansas? Most likely it’s true – that they are in a sock drawer nonetheless.

In his book Lynchpin, Seth Godin talks about the need to ship (publish). Ship what? Whatever “it” is that your passion is telling you the world needs to see. It could be your next (or first) book, the Man Candle, or the new iPad. When it came down to the wire, Steve Jobs was good at many things, but his ability to ship was outstanding. Simply put, if you don’t set a date, execute and deliver; all the work leading up to that point becomes far less valuable in a short time.

Perfection: the enemy of excellence
It’s true, really it is.  I’m not saying you should “half” what you do – far from it. I am saying, you need to be able to declare “when” and push the publish button. We’re all fallible humans, a few flaws in our work doesn’t make the masterpiece a piece of junk, it makes it all that more human.

Of course there is risk when you publish. People will judge (you are doing it right now), critics will say what they say, but at the end of the day you put something into the world that wasn’t there before. #awesome.

Just do it!
So I leave you with some encouragement to publish whatever “it” is. Be great, shoot for excellence and don’t let perfect get in the way!

Question of the day:
What is keeping you from pushing the publish button in your life? What is it that you need to ship? Are you the product you’ve been holding back?
